Choosing Intimacy and Growing Together on Velvet’s Edge

We invest in our careers, our health, and our personal growth. But how often do we give our intimate lives that same care and attention?

That question was at the heart of my conversation with Kelly Henderson and Chip Dorsch on the Velvet’s Edge Podcast. We talked about sex, sexual soulmates, speaking up about what we want, and the possibilities that open when we give ourselves permission to keep learning.

I also shared something deeply personal: my own journey from feeling sexually unsatisfied in my marriage to finally speaking up to my husband—and choosing to work toward intimacy together instead of divorce.

A Space for Honest Conversations

Kelly Henderson is a celebrity stylist and men’s groomer who understands that looking good on the outside only takes us so far. On Velvet’s Edge, she invites listeners to explore the inner work of growth, healing, and finding meaning in life’s unexpected turns.

Whether she’s having a thoughtful conversation with a therapist or healer, or laughing through life’s messy moments with Chip, the show makes room for honesty and humor. It speaks to people who have done everything they thought they were supposed to do and still feel something is missing.

That makes it a wonderful place to talk about intimacy. Our sexual lives can hold so many unspoken hopes, fears, and questions. Bringing them into the conversation gives us a place to begin.

Why Do We Leave Sex Out of Personal Growth?

Kelly asked why sex is so often the area of life where we don’t put in the growth work. It’s a question I wish more people would ask.

We’re comfortable admitting that a new skill takes practice. Yet when it comes to sex, many of us feel pressure to already know what we’re doing—or expect our partner to somehow know exactly what we want.

I want us to make room for curiosity. You can learn more about your body. You can find language for your desires. And you can invite your partner into that discovery without having every answer first.

Speaking Up Changed My Marriage

During our conversation, I shared how difficult it was to acknowledge that I wasn’t sexually satisfied in my marriage. Finally telling my husband opened a conversation we needed to have.

For us, choosing intimacy meant being willing to learn and make changes together. It meant giving our relationship attention in an area we could no longer leave unspoken.

Sharing that part of my story matters to me because I know how lonely it can feel to want more closeness and not know how to ask for it. An honest conversation can be uncomfortable. It can also open the door for something beautiful.

Exploring the Idea of Sexual Soulmates

Chip brought new questions to our discussion of sexual soulmates. It’s such an interesting topic because it invites us to explore what makes an intimate connection feel deeply satisfying.

For me, that conversation brings us back to curiosity, communication, and a willingness to keep discovering each other. What do you enjoy? What would you like more of? What have you been hesitant to share?

There is beauty in learning together. You don’t have to treat a question or a request as evidence that something has gone wrong. It can be an invitation to grow closer.

Your Sexual Growth Can Begin With You

You can take a step toward sexual growth on your own or with a partner. Start by noticing what you want to understand better, what feels good, and where you’ve been holding back from expressing yourself.

If you’re exploring with a partner, give yourselves room to talk without pressure to immediately solve everything. Listen, ask questions, and let the conversation unfold.

My hope is that this episode helps make intimacy easier to discuss. Sex is part of so many people’s lives, yet we often struggle to talk openly about it. We can bring more warmth, honesty, and even laughter to those conversations.
